New to Medicare: What You Need to Know

Medicare is a federal health insurance program mainly for:

  • People 65 and older

  • People under 65 with certain disabilities

  • People with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure)

Medicare helps cover hospital stays, doctor visits, and more — but it’s not completely free and doesn’t cover everything.

Affordable Health Insurance Plans

The Four Parts of Medicare

  • Part A – Hospital Insurance
Covers hospital stays, skilled nursing care, hospice, and some home health care.
Most people don’t pay a premium for Part A.

  • Part B – Medical Insurance
Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, lab work, and durable medical equipment.
Most people pay a monthly premium for Part B.

  • Part C – Medicare Advantage
An alternative way to get Medicare benefits through private insurance companies.
Often includes extra benefits like dental, vision, hearing, and drug coverage.

  • Part D – Prescription Drug Coverage
    Helps pay for prescription medications.
You can get it as a stand-alone plan (with Original Medicare) or built into most Advantage plans.

When You Can Enroll

  • Initial Enrollment Period (IEP):

    • 3 months before you turn 65

    • Your birthday month

    • 3 months after your birthday month

If you miss this window, you could pay late enrollment penalties — especially for Part B and Part D.
